I learned how to sail at Lake Arrowhead.  Many sailors consider Lake Arrowhead to be one of the trickier places to sail because the winds can shift, die and come up so suddenly not to mention the chop that develops.  My tennis buddy Bruce Murdy and I would sail in regattas sponsored by the Arrowhead Sailing Club with Bruce's skimmer.  Bruce captained and I crewed.  My mom's friend Hans Kleger owned a Cat Boat (C class) with one large mainsheet and two side boards.  I also sailed on Ron Johnsons catamaran several times; that was the only catamaran on Lake Arrowhead in the 60's.  Since I never owned my own sailboat, I was always dependent on others for the sailing experience but occasionally I'd get the opporutnity to rent one, like a Hobie Cat somewhere and take Toni out for a good time.  Some of my friends from Lake Arrowhead and San Marino became pretty respected sailors not to mention a few from USC.  Scott Allan comes to mind first and foremost.  Scott sailed in the Olympics in 1968 and later coached the sailing team at the US Naval Academy. My cousin, Dave Bowlus, who was a championship sailor in Balboa and who has coached high school sailing teams, now runs a local sailing school for local kids. The school is apart of the YMCA of San Luis Obispo and called Sail Away Camp. Click here for information
